Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
Tuckahoe Counseling is an out-of-network therapy practice. We do not bill insurance directly, but we’re happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Many clients with out-of-network benefits receive partial reimbursement, and we’re glad to help you understand what to ask your provider.
Why don’t you accept insurance?
Working outside of insurance allows us to offer more personalized and flexible care, without restrictions around diagnoses, session limits, or treatment approaches. This allows therapy to move at a pace that best supports you or your child, rather than being dictated by insurance requirements.
What are your fees?
Session fees range from $150 to $215 depending on clinician and session type. We are happy to discuss fees and availability when you reach out for a consultation.
A limited number of reduced-fee slots are available through Open Path Collective (https://openpathcollective.org), a nonprofit network connecting clients with licensed therapists at reduced rates. If cost is a barrier to care, you can explore Open Path at openpathcollective.org. Please note that our sliding scale availability is limited and we may not always have openings.
Do you offer longer or intensive sessions?
Yes. In some cases, extended or intensive sessions may be appropriate, such as for deeper processing, family work, or focused support around specific challenges. Availability, length, and fees for longer sessions vary and can be discussed based on clinical need and fit.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. We provide secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual therapy for clients located anywhere in Virginia. Virtual sessions can be a flexible option for adults, teens, and parents.
Do you offer in-person therapy?
Yes. We offer in-person therapy at our Richmond, VA office. Availability varies by clinician, and we’re happy to help you determine what option may be the best fit.
What ages do you work with?
We work with adults, adolescents, and children. Our services include individual therapy, family therapy, and parent support, with developmentally appropriate approaches for each stage of life.
We do see younger children, including those under age 6, on a limited basis. Because our physical office space is not designed for large-movement or highly active play, we’re thoughtful about determining whether our setting and approach are the right fit for younger children. We’re always happy to talk this through and help guide families toward the best option.
How long are therapy sessions?
Most therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Session length and frequency are tailored to individual needs and may shift over time as goals and circumstances change.
How often will I (or my child) attend therapy?
Many clients begin with weekly sessions, while others attend biweekly or on an as-needed basis. This is something we’ll discuss collaboratively and revisit as therapy progresses.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 48 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or missed sessions may result in a fee, as this time is reserved specifically for you.
How do I get started with therapy?
Getting started is simple. Complete our contact form, and a member of our team will follow up to discuss availability, next steps, and whether Tuckahoe Counseling feels like a good fit for your needs.
How do I know if Tuckahoe Counseling is the right fit?
Finding the right therapist matters. We offer a free 15 minute consultation to ensure we're a good clinical fit and give you a chance to ask any questions you may have about therapy, finances, clinician approaches, etc... We’re always happy to help guide you, even if we’re not the best match.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept major credit cards, Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and checks. Payment is due at the time of each session. Returned checks are subject to a fee.
